New Viking 44 Open
Viking strengthened its reputation for building the best high-performance express fishing boats in the industry with the debut of the 44 Open at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last fall. Featuring a two stateroom layout it’s sure to attract interest from a wide range of boat owners ranging from families ready to take the next step into the Viking family as well as owners of large multi-outboard-powered center console craft who are looking to step up to a vessel offering more comfort, conveniences and weather protection. Thanks to efficient use of space and many of the same amenities found on larger Viking models, the 44 Open also affords seasoned owners looking to downsize the opportunity to continue experiencing Viking quality and performance. From her spacious mezzanine cockpit and command deck to luxurious accommodations below, the 44 Open combines a hardcore sportfishing boat layout with a comfortable yacht décor to meet the needs of today’s demanding bluewater fishermen while also offering the cruising comfort for a family looking to enjoy the Viking lifestyle. With her raked bow, wraparound windshield and gently sloping sheer, the 44 Open combines strength, style and fishability. The running surface is equally adept featuring a 14.3-degree transom deadrise and a design that delivers ride, performance and handling for the utmost confidence in any sea condition. Freeboard measuring just over six feet forward handles stubborn head seas and just over three feet aft makes releasing billfish fast and efficient.
The command deck is just steps away from the cockpit action and features many of the same notable characteristics of larger Viking Open siblings such as the signature centerline forward helm station on a raised platform for enhanced visibility fore and aft. Three Release Marine teak ladder back adjustable pedestal seats plus a table accompanies a four-person L-shaped padded lounge while the port console holds refrigeration and stowage. The raised molded fiberglass console awaits a custom Atlantic Marine Electronics’ package and has room for navigation, communication and entertainment accessories. By utilizing this Viking subsidiary the 44 Open can be delivered tournament ready. Recessed compartments accommodate radios and additional equipment, plus accessory switches and controls. An optional teak helm pod with single lever controls adds class, functionality and style. Air conditioning with reverse cycle heat provides four season comfort while a Costa Clear enclosure provides protection in any weather condition. When delivered with a custom designed and built Palm Beach Towers tuna tower, another of Viking’s experienced subsidiaries, the 44 Open comes ready to fish with a second complete helm with additional electronics, a fiberglass buggy top and Rupp outriggers.
Passage through the port side sliding companionway door and down a large set of stairs leads to the climate-controlled salon and with a beam of well over 16 feet, she’s the widest of any boat in her class. The salon is spacious and functional for relaxing during extended fishing trips or when entertaining dockside. To starboard, the galley is opposite an L-shaped lounge with a dinette table. Teak cabinetry with meticulous joinery, large Corian countertops, an electric range, garbage disposal, under-counter refrigerator and freezer units and a microwave/convection oven are features found not only on larger Vikings but on the 44 Open as well. Other amenities include a stereo system with a 24-inch flat screen HD TV, central vacuum system and LED overhead, indirect and decorative rope lighting.
The forward master stateroom features an island queen bed with drawer storage below. The mattress has a lift-up top with gas pistons and maple-lined storage underneath and there’s also a maple-lined hanging locker to port. A 19-inch flat screen television and access to the head and shower are among the other standard amenities. The head has an electric toilet, custom Amtico flooring, fiberglass stall shower with satin nickel fixture, and medicine cabinet with mirrored doors, Corian countertop and sink with satin nickel faucet. The aft stateroom is to port and features a double berth and a maple-lined hanging locker with drawer storage below.
The 44 Open’s 119-square-foot mezzanine cockpit is rigged for the bluewater angler and features a transom live well/fish box and walk-through transom door with a lift gate. There’s plenty of tackle stowage in a port side tackle area behind a push release door and an ice cold drink is always nearby thanks to a refrigerated helm step box. Two insulated and removable in-deck fish boxes with pump out provide additional fish storage. Cabinet storage for gaffs and other accessories is located under the gunwale and mezzanine seating includes freezer storage below as well as engine room access while the mezzanine steps have storage coolers on both sides. Fresh and raw water washdown keep the deck clean during a hot bite and makes tackle clean-up a snap during the ride home. A laminated mounting plate is provided in deck for future fighting chair or decorative table installation. For the utmost comfort, the 44 Open has also been engineered for installation of a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer.
The engine room, lazarette, forward bilge and anchor locker feature snow white Awlgrip for maximum visibility and easy maintenance. A Delta-T engine room ventilation system, oil exchange system and an Onan 13.5 kW E-QD (electronic quiet diesel) Series generator are just some of the standard mechanical and electrical equipment. Twin 800 horsepower six-cylinder inline MAN diesel engines provide a cruising speed of 33 knots and top end speed of over 37-plus knots based on load, sea conditions and other environmental factors. SC (Sport Coupe) and ST (Sport Tower) option packages are available and include a canvas back enclosure, three-sided fiberglass enclosure, LED spreader lights, overhead helm lights, overhead storage lockers integrated into the hardtop, radar pod and prep required for teaser reel installation in the hardtop.
